Beggar-tight and drunk upon their listless flagellation
Three ghosts approach the station
Two white, one grey
To wipe their dreaded ennui across the train seats

“It’s not personal” clangs the persona
The screamer entwined with the moaner
As the poltergeist breaks the furniture
Impersonally in perpetuity
And honey has coated the train windows
The Marvelettes are on the radio
Singing “Destination Fuck Knows”.
It's a departure opportunity.
But the spookier their act of a shared death
The ghosts appear as actor’s breath
Projected on the earthstage bodily
Invisible all but stink and audibly
Around an amateur production;
Some awful and cloying MacBeth
Where the casting is disavowed
“It’s not personal” bleats Banquo
A spectacle to a one spectre crowd
Played by two ghosts in one costume
Arguing what is and what is not allowed.
There are near-dead cats in the carriage
As a still feeling plans out its marriage
To an eternal minute of peace
The machines that are serviced and greased with fear and care
Are a few hundred miles from here or anywhere.
“Isn’t it beautiful”
Is too banal to capture true
The vineyards solemn vow
So I keep my head clear
And I shut my stupid mouth (for now).
A station approaches with a wry smile
“This might be the last stop for a while”
Now stepping off onto grass, the platform without signs
Without maps or linear time to accrue
Without a nation or a plan
Knowing nothing much at all now but you
“it’s not personal” howls the train
“it’s not personal” howls the station
“it’s not personal” howls the man.
